Chapter Nine — Leader of the Laundromat
We finally gathered our dirty clothes and the sheets that I had to remove from the washer, and headed into town to find a laundromat. “What is this strange place?” LOL I hadn’t been to a laundromat in years! So we selected 4 machines close together and start separating everything, adding our also-new-to-us Tide Pods. Wash costs $2.50, so Sweetie inserts a quarter in each of the 5 slots, thinking we do that a 2nd time for the other $1.25. But the slot wouldn’t go in. Luckily, the attendant (who we found out months later is the owner), comes over and says, “you need to insert TWO quarters into each slot.” Ohhh!
Ok, so now we’re in business. We sat down and played games on our phones until the wash was done. Several people were there, including a nice older black lady named Winnie. We chatted a little. Then it was time to run the dryer. Yikes! $3.50! So we loaded two washers-full into one of the dryers (I’m thinking college loads here), and Sweetie inserts the quarters. I asked Winnie how to change the heat setting, and commented about how expensive it was to dry two loads of clothes. She looked at the time on the dryer (which I didn’t notice), and she said, “Oh, honey, you’ve got 99 minutes of drying time! It’s only 25 cents for 8 minutes!” Ohhh! And we all laughed. And we learned.
So we just dried those two washers-full for about 35 minutes, then added the other two for another 35 minutes or so, and still had 22 minutes of drying time left! By this time, Winnie was done with her laundry and had left. So I asked a few other people if anyone needed the dryer, that there was 22 minutes of drying time left. Whether they used it or not, we’ll never know. But what we DO know is how to use the washers and dryers!! Even Old Farts can learn a few new tricks!
And I dub Winnie as The Leader of the Laundromat! (if you’ve never heard this song, it’s a play on Leader of the Pack. Pretty funny.)
