Chapter Twenty-Three — Yearning for Sleep

While the air mattress was better than the mattress that came with this camper, it hasn’t helped our backs at all. We both wake up achy and tired. One good purchase, however, was the weather radio. It paid for itself last night. (At least we know it works!)

There were storms in the forecast last night, but looking at radar before we went to sleep, it looked like they fizzled out.

Oh, no, they didn’t. I got waken up at 4am to rain, then thunder and lightning, and then more torrential rain. I turned my phone back on, and there was a lightning warning from Tom Skilling. It was quite a storm and it went on for about four hours. How do I know that? Because I was awake for most of it! I dozed off during a brief lull in the thunder, and at 7am, the weather radio went off announcing a flash flood warning for people living near lakes and ponds. Well, heck, we’re not far from the Kankakee River, and have two ponds on either side of the tin can. So got up to look out the windows and everything was intact. I had envisioned our camper becoming a floating home! But glad I was wrong. I went back to bed, but the storm continued for about another hour. Then blissful sleep.

At 9 a.m., I got bolted out of bed by a thunderous truck going by…not on the highway, but right next to our camper! What on earth? Then the racket began…they’re cutting trees down, right next to our next door neighbor’s camper. So much for blissful sleep!!
