Chapter Twenty-Two — Definitely Not Glamping

Now that we’ve been here almost four months, we have our opinions about this campground. Their brochures boasts of amenities. Amenities?!! This campground doesn’t have any! Would you consider the Kankakee River nearby an amenity?

Okay, the fireworks on the 4th was nice, but whatever else happened here, we weren’t privy to until after it was over.

We heard about a pot luck dinner early in the summer…after it was over.

Then there was an ice cream social, which we were told about when it was about to happen, but we were leaving because we had other plans.

We were told K had brochures about Gladiolus Fest…two days after it started (it was 3 days long.)

The key word here is communication. That shouldn’t be hard to do in this day and age. Plus Cissy has my email address and our phone number. What would it have taken to contact us?

And the biggie was lack of communication when the tornado hit.

One day Sweetie said “we have no water.” What? I was about to take a shower (when I was still taking them in the camper.). Great, so I texted Cissy and she said “the whole campground is out.” Someone hit one of their water spigots. It would have been nice to know!

Then one day K greeted us to say the power was out, that ComEd had an issue with one of their grids. Again, had we been out all day and if the power wasn’t turned on, we could have lost food in the fridge/freezer. Luckily it was only out for two hours.

We usually shower late at night (after the news), so it’s pretty quiet in the shower house. So I get all my stuff out (soaps, towels, shower poof), get undressed, and turn on the water. And the hot water never came! It was ICE COLD! WTH?! So I get dressed again, put all my stuff back in the bag and drive over to the men’s side (so Sweetie doesn’t have to wait in the dark.) I opened the men’s room door a crack and said, “Sweetie, do you have hot water?” He said “no” Great. So he had to get dressed too, and we went to the other shower house that the weekend campers use. We don’t like using that one especially on weekends, because people are pigs. There’s always sand & mud and I feel sorry for J to have to clean all that. But we lucked out…no one was in there and there was hot water!

One other time the hot water was out in the smaller shower house that we use, but at least this time there was a sign on the door. However, I will not miss showering with water that smells like rotten eggs. Ugh. (have you noticed how many times I said ugh?)
